Weathered Carolina Birdhouse

Good Tuesday morning.  I know I have said this so many times on my blog posts but I do love birdhouses.  I couldn’t resist the Poppystamps Carolina Birdhouse and couldn’t wait to make a project with it. I paired it with the My Favorite Things Woodgrain Fence, Impression Obsession Tall Grass, Grass Border, Leafy Branch 2, the cardinals from the Birch Trees set and Memory Box Flying Birds and flowers made using the Flower Mound. 

Before I started I searched on Google for birdhouse photos just to get inspiration for coloring.  I found one that I loved that was weathered white with weathered country blue trim.  That was the inspiration that took me from a simple weathered birdhouse project to a complete whole scene based on distressed and weathered wood.

 

I cut the birdhouse using kraft cardstock and painted the body and trim with Distress Crackle Paint. I used my paper piercer to create score lines on the body of the house picked away places on the blue trim to age. I cut the fence using white but painted over it with the white crackle paint and then distressed lightly with the piercer and added dirty marks using a mini applicator and gray ink. I cut the branches using white cardstock and colored with Copic markers.  I cut several pieces of grass and branches using olive cardstock. I created a soft blue cloudy sky with my hand cut cloud template, weathered wood ink and ink blending tool.

I knew I wanted to frame the scene but knew it couldn’t be just a regular cardstock frame.  I cut it from a piece of heavy cardboard and painted it with the blue crackle paint, heat dried it (I’m never patient enough to let it dry on it’s own) and then lightly added a fairly dry thin coat of the white crackle paint. I used my paper piercer to pick away at the paint and chipped out chunks of paint to allow the brown of the cardboard to show through.  I wanted the frame to look old, old, old!  I really love how it turned out.blending tool. 

I attached the grass border directly to the back of the frame and then attached a layer of mounting tape.  I attached the fence to the base layer of mounting tape and then attached a second layer of tape.  This would give distance between the fence and background to add dimension. I tucked some of the tall grass pieces and leafy branch sections to the grassy area and attached the branches to the top of the frame.  I tucked the birdhouse in behind the fence and attached with mounting tape.  I cut the tiny birds using red cardstock and attached them to the house and fence with mounting tape.  I added a few tiny red flowers to the grass to carry on the touches of red and finished by adding one tiny red flying bird off in the distance to draw the eye up and to add a touch of color to the top of the scene. Here’s a closer view of the birdhouse.  

I love how this turned out.  All the weathered wood reminds me of going to visit an old farmhouse.

The frame idea I will use, that is excellent inspiration, I can see so many uses for the weathered frame. The frame would be great for guy cards, fishing cabin look. The guys and DIL love to go fishing. Guy cards are challenging.
