Lilac Inspired Arbor

Good Monday morning.  My project today was made for the Splitcoaststampers Inspiration Challenge.  This week we were provided The Vermont Country Store for our inspiration site.  One of my favorite color combinations is purple, green and white so I was especially inspired by the Lilac Vinyl Tablecloth found here. I made my card using the Taylored Expressions Garden Arbor and Gate and Arbor Accessories sets paired with the Memory Box Butterfly Delights, Impression Obsession Small Grass Border, Leaves and Stems and the Spellbinders Floral Ovals.

I cut the floral oval and attached it to the purple layer with strips of mounting tape.  I cut a grass border and attached it to the base of the floral oval to create a background for the arbor.

I cut several sections of the vine and the tiny flowers from the Accessories set.  I attached one full vine to the arbor with glossy accents.  I only attached in a few spots so the rest of the section of vine would look loose and natural. I then cut the other sections apart and attached them to the arbor to fill it in on both sides. I formed the tiny flowers with my stylus and molding pad and attached around the arbor with glossy accents.  I cut the fence section in half and attached to both sides of the arbor with glossy accents. I applied thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the arbor and fence and attached it to the card base.  I cut two small sections of grass border and attached in front of the fence and then attached a couple stems with tiny flowers on each side of the arbor.  I added a few butterflies to the scene for the finishing touch.  I think the Butterfly Delights might be retired as I couldn’t find it on Ellen’s site to link.

In The Garden

Good Sunday morning.  My project today was made using the Taylored Expression In The Garden silhouette die and was paired with the Memory Box Butterfly Delights,  Puffy Clouds  and Lawn Fawn Scalloped Rectangle Stackables to create a fun and colorful scene.  Texture was added to the grass and tree top using a stamp from the Art Impressions Watercolor Foliage.

I cut the whole scene out using watercolor paper.  I lightly misted with water using a mini mister so the paper would accept the color more easily.  The large sections of the scene were painted using a water brush and distress reinkers.  I add a drop of reinker into the lid of the ink pads and mix the ink with water from my water brush and paint on to the paper. I used Peeled Paint for the tree and ground area and Gathered Twigs for the trunk of the tree.  The fence was painted using Pumice Stone reinker.  I cut a second tree top, painted and then stamped with a foliage stamp to add texture.  I popped the tree top up on the base using mounting tape.  I cut a second girl image, colored her with markers and attached her to the base using rolled glue dots. The flowers and bicycle were colored using Distress markers. The ground area was stamped with the foliage image to match the tree top.

I applied strips of mounting tape to  the back of the  tree top and girl portion of the scene and then applied ATG adhesive to the back of the lower grass section and attached the scene to the card base. I wanted the tree and girl to stand away from the card base but wanted the grassy area flat so I could attached the scalloped red base over top with mounting tape. I cut the scalloped red layer using one side of the largest rectangle die and attached it over the grass area with mounting tape. The clouds were attached to the card base with mounting tape.  The tiny red butterflies were attached with glossy accents for the finishing touch to the scene.

I like how the red is repeated on the girls dress, flowers, bicycle, butterflies and scalloped layers.  I originally was going to use all different colors for the flowers, bike and dress to make the scene look more springy  but thought red coordinated far better and made all of those images pop better against the blue background.

Mixed Media Experiment

Good Saturday afternoon.  My project today was made for the Splitcoaststampers Inspiration Challenge. A Pinterest Mix Media/Canvas Art site was provided as our inspiration and I must say I almost became overwhelmed with all the wonderful projects. A few weeks ago my friend Audrie posted a gorgeous beach card using texture paste that took my breath away.  She used the paste to create a foamy ocean and puffy sky as a background for her framed beach house. I was so intrigued because I had never used texture paste.  I was getting ready to order some so I could give Audrie’s technique a try and then remembered I had purchased some quite a while back and had never even opened the jar.  Sad isn’t!!  Anyway….I decided to try my hand at creating a mixed media project for today’s challenge and was inspired by two different projects.  I loved the brick and window in the project found here and the frosty, snow covered  evergreen and pinecones found here.  Here’s what I came up with.

I embossed the background layer with Taylored Expressions Brick Embossing Folder using white cardstock.  I applied brown ink to the brick with a sponge and heat dried with my gun.  I sat looking at my bottle of Wendy Vecchi’s white Embossing Paste wondering the best way to apply it over the brick and finally decided to use my finger.  I dabbed it all over trying to leave some of the brown showing through but got a little heavy handed.  I also had the complication of having the brown ink coming up into the paste and turning it a little brown.  Ugh!  I reached for a bottle of white gesso and dabbed it around over the paste with my finger to try and cover the brown spots.  It worked pretty well but I needed to add a couple coats in places.  When this mess was all dry and used a sanding block to sand some of the paste and paint off so more of the brown brick would show.

I cut the window die and applied the embossing paste over it with my finger.  After the window dried I sponged a touch of brown on it to tone down the white to match better with the background and then attached it using thin strips of mounting tape.

I loved the snowy foliage from the inspiration piece and was inspired to use Impression Obsession Holly Flourish and poinsettias from the Tattered Lace Winter Florals set to embellish my window.  I cut and formed the poinsettias and then assembled them using glossy accents.  I applied the embossing paste to the poinsettia petals using a old small brush and set them aside to dry.  I cut the holly and lightly dabbed the paste with my finger. Once everything was dry I arranged the holly and flowers and attached with glossy accents.  I discovered that adhesive doesn't like to stick very well to embossing paste so I had to hold the pieces secure in place to allow them to adhere completely.  I finished by placing a tiny pearl in the center of each flower.

The embossing paste  was lots of fun to play and experiment with.  Now maybe I will make myself pull out a palette and try using it with the several stencils that I purchased and have never used.  LOL!

Shabby and Tattered Santa

Good Monday morning.  Today I’m sharing another of my projects made for the Splitcoaststampers Dare To Get Dirty challenges. I love using designer paper as backgrounds on my cards but very rarely use it as a main focal point.  I thought the Santa image from the Graphic 45 Twas the Night Before Christmas and would be beautiful image to frame and highlight.  I paired it using Tattered Lace Christmas Florals and Impression Obsession Pine Pair. I must admit that I stepped way out of my comfort zone to make a shabby  and distressed project but I really like how all the coordinating papers from the pad work together.

I created the frame for Santa using Spellbinders Classic Circles and Classic Scallop Circles dies. I used my deckle scissors to distress the edges of both layers and then sponged with vintage photo distress ink and a mini applicator. I attached the green frame layer over the picture using thin strips of mounting tape to create dimension and then attached it to the red layer with ATG adhesive.

I formed the poinsettia and foliage using Susan’s Garden Tool Kit.  I assembled the poinsettia using glossy accents and then attached it to the frame layer with glossy accents.   Once the glue dried  I tucked the holly and pine pieces all around the poinsettia to create the floral spray.. I attached a tiny pearl in the flower center and finished by brushing Clear Wink of Stella over the poinsettia petals to add a touch of sparkle.  I guess sparkle doesn’t really go with shabby but I just couldn’t help myself. LOL!

Acorns and Fall Leaves

Good Sunday morning.  I have another project made using the Tattered Lace Winter Florals set.  I used the same layout that I used for my Winter Florals Pine and Pinecones post but this time I used the acorn and fall leaves. The leaves and acorns are so much prettier in person but for some reason I had a really hard time getting the colors to photograph.

I cut all the images using cream cardstock and colored using a mini applicator and spiced marmalade, crushed olive, fired brick and vintage distress inks. I applied versa to each of them and embossed with clear embossing powder.

I wanted the color orange on the frame matting to match the leaves so I applied spiced marmalade ink to the edges with a mini applicator, applied versa and embossed with clear embossing powder.  I assembled the double matted frame and attached to the card base with mounting tape.

I attached the three larger leaves to the card base with glossy accents.  I added a smaller leaf in the center of the three leaves so the card base wouldn’t show through the opening between the acorns and the attached leaves.  I attached the acorns with double layers of mounting tape.  I hand cut a few twiggy branches to attach leaves to and to add another element of interest to the design.
